Frequently Asked Questions
  • When will the intervention begin?
You and your partner will be randomly chosen to either receive CBCT immediately or be monitored while waiting 12 weeks before receiving the treatment.

  • How many sessions and assessments are there?
CBCT for PTSD consists of 15 sessions with a therapist. Both members of the couple will be assessed by a clinician 4 times over the course of the study.

  • Will my partner and I be compensated for participating in the study?
Yes. You and your partner will each receive $25 for each assessment completed, for a possible total of $100 each. You will be paid for the completion of assessments, because they are above and beyond your standard clinical care. This payment is also to acknowledge your involvement in the study. You are eligible to receive payment for completing assessments, even if you do not continue in therapy.

  • Can I continue to see my current psychotherapist while in the study?
Yes. However, we ask that the visits be for brief check-ins rather than to target PTSD symptoms.

  • Can we participate if one or both of us are recovering from a substance abuse problem?
Yes. Individuals who have a history of problem drinking or drug use can participate as long as they have been sober for at least 3 months.

  • Can my partner and/or I stay on psychiatric medications while participating in the study?
Yes. You can take psychiatric medications as long as your medication routine has been stable for at least 2 months prior to entering the study.

  • Is CBCT for PTSD an "exposure therapy"?
No. CBCT for PTSD does not involve repeatedly reviewing the details of the trauma(s). However, the trauma will be discussed to understand your individual lives and the ways you relate as a couple.

  • Does it matter what type of trauma(s) my partner or I have experienced?
No. CBCT for PTSD is applicable to a variety of traumatic experiences.
